Offseason
The 1985-86 Chicago Black Hawks were coming off a second place Norris Division finish and made it to the Clarence Campbell Conference Finals, but again could not get past Gretzky's Oilers in the playoffs who won their second straight Stanley Cup Championship. The Black Hawks were happy with their roster and made no major offseason moves. There were high hopes and optimism heading into the season. The only Black Hawks change came about while someone was going through the team's records, and discovered in the team's original NHL contract that the name was printed as a compound word "Blackhawks" as opposed to two separate words ("Black Hawks") which was the way most sources had been printing it for 60 years and as the team had always officially listed it. The name officially became "Chicago Blackhawks" from the 1986-87 season on.
Regular season
The Blackhawks started slow winning only four of their first 14 games, but would heat up winning 14 of 18 games in December–January. They would finish the season in first place in the Norris Division with a record of 39-33-8.
Offensively, the Blackhawks were again led by Denis Savard, who led the team in scoring for the fifth year in a row with team highs of 47 goals, 69 assists and 116 points, which placed him seventh in NHL scoring (Gretzky again lead the league - this time with 215 points). Troy Murray was second on the team in goals, assists and points (45-54-99), led the club with a +32 rating, and won the Selke award as best defensive forward. Al Secord also reached the 40-goal level, and once again led the team in penalty minutes, as he accumulated 201. On defense, Doug Wilson again led the club with 64 points, while Behn Wilson (no relation) added 51 points. Defenseman Bob Murray served as team captain for two months while Darryl Sutter was out due to injury.
In goal, Murray Bannerman led the club with 20 victories in 48 games, but had a high 4.48 GGA. Bob Sauve acquired in October from the Sabres, split time with Bannerman, and had 19 vicotories in 38 games with a 3.94 GAA.

Playoffs
The Hawks opened the playoffs against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who finished fourth in the Norris with a record of 25-48-7, 29 points behind the Hawks. The series opened with two games at Chicago Stadium, and the Blackhawks dropped both games with scores of 5-3 and 6-4. The series moved to Toronto where the Maple Leafs finished off the shocking series sweep with a 7-2 win to end the series in three. That year Gretzky's Oilers were eliminated in the second round, and if the Blackhawks could have won their highly favored playoff against Toronto, they would not have had to go through Edmonton to get to the Finals.
