The 2000 Sukma Games, officially known as the VIII SUKMA, was a multi-sports event held in Penang from May 25, 2000 to June 4, 2000 with 332 events in 29 sports and disciplines featured in the games.
This was Penang's first time to host the Sukma Games.[1] It is the seventh state to host the Sukma Games after Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor, Perak, Pahang and Selangor and the first in the 21st Century.
The final medal tally was led by Selangor, followed by Sarawak and Perak. Several national records were broken during the games. Allen Ong and Sia Wai Yen were awarded Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoman respectively. Though there were several controversies, the games were a successful ones hosted by Penang yet with the rising standard of competition among Malaysian member states.

Host
This is the 8th edition of Sukma Games since its introduction in 1986. It was for the very first time the state held such a national sporting event. At that time, all states held their respective Sukma Games except for Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu, Malacca, Perlis and Kelantan.
Prior to this games, Penang has yet to host any Sukma Games. As this is the first time the Isle of Pearl held such a grand national sporting event, many of the sports venues and facilities were either completed in time or renovated. Penang won the hosting rights of Sukma Games through bidding, the only state to do so so far.
Mascot
In the 2000 Sukma Games, a pair of parakeet (male and female) became the official mascot. This was the first time male and female mascot ever used in such event. The male and female mascots are called Bang Bayan and Chombee, respectively. The name of the female parakeet, "Chombee" is a popular local name in the state of Penang. In present day, many people are familiar with Parakeet because this bird species is commonly kept as a pet. Another interesting feature is the fact that Parakeet can mimic human voice and perform some tricks. In the tradition of Indian fortune teller in Penang, for example, the Parakeet is often used to predict one’s luck. The mascots of this games are the only one with male and female so far among all Sukma Games mascots. This concept dismissed the stereotypical view which suggest that Sukma games are dominantly male contestant.[2]

Fourth place-Points System

This is the second time Sukma Games adopted the Fourth Place-Points System. Like many other Sukma Games, invitational teams are not entitled to this system. Organiser also have misleading practice of including the system in the medal table and rank a contingent by most number of points on the medal table.
