The 2008–09 Michigan State Spartans men's basketball team represented Michigan State University in the 2008–09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The head coach was Tom Izzo who was in his 14th year. The team played their home games at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, MI and were member of the Big Ten Conference. MSU finished the season with a record of 31–7, 15–3 to win the Big Ten regular season championship. The Spartans received their 12th straight NCAA Tournament bid as a #2 seed. They advanced to the Final Four for the fourth time under Izzo and lost in the National Championship game to North Carolina.

Previous Season

The Spartans finished the 2007–08 season with an overall record of 27–9 and in fourth place in the Big Ten with a 12–6 record. Michigan State received a #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their 11th straight trip to the Tournament, and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, their 7th trip under Tom Izzo.

The Spartans lost Drew Neitzel (13.9 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 4.0 APG) to graduation following the season.

Season Summary

MSU was led by sophomore Kalin Lucas (14.7 Pts, 2.1 Reb, 4.6 Ast), junior Raymar Morgan (10.2 Pts, 5.3 Reb, 1.2 Ast), and senior Goran Suton (10.4 Pts, 8.4 Reb, 1.6 Ast). The team began the season ranked #6 in the country, but was surprised with an early season loss to Maryland in the first round of the Old Spice Classic.[1] The Spartans faced #1 North Carolina in the Big-Ten-ACC Challenge at Ford Field, but were blown out, 98–63.[2] Michigan State finished their non-conference schedule with just those two losses, finishing 9–2 and ranked #10 in the country.

The Spartans cruised through Big Ten play with wins over #21 Minnesota,[3] #20 Illinois,[4] and #19 Purdue.[5] MSU won the Big Ten championship by four games with a 15–3 record, 25–5 overall, and #7 in the country. Kalin Lucas was named Big Ten Player of the Year[6] and Tom Izzo was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year.[7] The Spartans lost in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament to Ohio State.[8]

Michigan State received the #2 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament, their 12th straight appearance in the tournament. The Spartans defeated Robert Morris in the First Round[9] and USC in the Second Round to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.[10] In the Sweet Sixteen, MSU faced #14 Kansas and advanced to the Elite Eight with a 67–62 win.[11] In the Elite Eight, the Spartans faced overall #1 Louisville and won 64–52.[12] The win sent MSU to the Final Four for the 4th time in 11 seasons. The Final Four was held at at Ford Field in Detroit, within 60 miles of the Michigan State campus. In the national semifinals, Michigan State defeated UConn, 82–73, to advance to the National Championship game.[13] There, the Spartans were re-matched with North Carolina, whom they had also lost to earlier in the season at Ford Field. The Spartans were defeated by North Carolina 89–72 marking the Spartans first ever loss in the National Championship game.[14]

The Spartans faced three #1 seeds (Louisville, UConn, and North Carolina) in the tournament, only losing to North Carolina.
