January

  • January 5Senator Panfilo Lacson left the Philippines, shortly before charges against him were filed for being the alleged mastermind in the murder of publicist Bubby Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito as claimed by former policeman Cesar Mancao.
  • January 14 – Dr. Mercedes B. Concepcion and Dr. Ernesto O. Domingo were conferred the title and rank of National Scientist for Demography and Internal Medicine, respectively.
  • January 21 – Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants detonated a bomb near the house of a Basilan province mayor. One teenager was injured.[1]

February

  • February 21 – One Abu Sayyaf senior leaders, Albader Parad, has been killed.[2]
  • February 27 – Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants killed one militiaman and 12 civilians in Maluso.[3]

March

  • March 4National Scientist Lourdes J. Cruz was recognised as one of the five laureates of L'Oreal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science for the discovery of conotoxins produced by certain marine snails that can serve as painkillers and pharmaceutical probes to study brain function.

  • November 30 – Former policeman Gerardo Biong, convicted in the Vizconde massacre case, is freed after 15 years of imprisonment. Biong was found guilty of burning bedsheets and tampering with other evidence in the crime.[10]

December

  • December 7 – The Supreme Court (SC) declared as "unconstitutional" Executive Order No. 1, creating the Truth Commission. The Philippine Truth Commission was created by President Benigno Aquino III and tasked to investigate cases of graft and corruption during the Arroyo administration.[12]
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the new peso bills have special security features and quality material.[17] However, several errors have been discovered on the banknotes and have become the subject of ridicule by critics.[18]
  • December 21 – Partial lunar eclipse was seen all over the country as the last stages of the total lunar eclipse will end.
  • December 27 – President Benigno S. Aquino III signed the P1.645-trillion national budget for 2011.[22][23]
