On 13 April 2016, a Britten-Norman BN-2T Turbine Islander operated by Sunbird Aviation crashed about 1 km (0.54 nmi; 0.62 mi) short of the runway at Kiunga, Papua New Guinea, in the Western Province. Eleven passengers (including three children) and the Australian pilot were killed. Nine people died on impact, with a further three declared dead on arrival at Kiunga Hospital.[1][2][3]

The PNG Accident Investigation Commission sent two investigators to Kiunga to investigate the crash.[4]
