The 2021 Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to take place from late November to December in 2021 and will feature some 30-36 sports, mainly those played at the Olympics Games.[1] Initially, Ho Chi Minh City was considered to host the Games, however the plan shelved on the grounds of construction cost.[2] Hanoi is the only locality in Vietnam that has proper facilities such as well-built stadiums, sports complexes, and others for shooting, swimming, and the like.[3] Focused in Hanoi, some events are also expected to spread into surrounding areas such as Bac Ninh, Hai Duong, Hai Phong, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh and Hoa Binh.[1]

Development and preparation

Vietnam has plans to spend US$78 million on the upgrading of Hanoi’s sporting facilities and the organisation of the Games. Scheduled to be held from late November and into December, $8.1 million of the budget is expected to be earned back from television rights, food and accommodation paid by national delegations, and sponsorship.[1]
