In May 2005, Able suspended manufacturing and distribution of its entire product line, following a recall of all products produced by the company. The reason for the recall, as stated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), was "serious concerns" that the pharmaceuticals made by Able were not produced in accordance with acceptable quality standards. The company filed a petition to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, Trenton Division on July 18, 2005.

The intellectual property and assets of Able Labs was purchased by Sun Pharmaceuticals of Mumbai, India in December 2005. In 2005, Sun also purchased a plant in Bryan, Ohio and the business of ICN, Hungary from Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
