Ali Montazeri (born Ali Montazeri Moghaddam) is an Iranian public health scientist living in Tehran, Iran with expertise on health-related quality of life and psychometric properties of patient-reported outcomes. He was born in 1958 in Qom, Iran.

Education

He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown and then moved to Tehran where he started his undergraduate studies in Iran University of Medical Sciences. In 1983 he received his first degree (B.Sc.) in laboratory sciences. For while he left university but it was 1992 that he moved to Glasgow and enrolled with University of Glasgow (Department of Public Health) studying Master of Public Health (MPH). After successful completion of his MPH in 1993, He continued his studies and registered for a PhD program in Public Health and Epidemiology. In 1996 he finished his studies and returned home in 1997. He was among the first investigators that devoted his thesis to Quality of life in cancer patients. Since then he was an active academic in teaching and research and contributed substantially to public health research in general and to quality of life research in particular in Iran.

Research

Quality of life in cancer patients

Montazeri is among few investigators who for the first time proved that health-related quality of life is a prognostic factor for cancer survival. In fact, he showed that quality of life before the diagnosis of cancer is the most important clinical factor affecting survival. He provided sound scientific justification of his observation which is important for all health services because it gives direction to clinical treatment of cancer patients and thus leading to decrease suffering in cancer patients.[1][2]

Knowledge of cancer diagnosis

He showed that the knowledge of cancer diagnosis by patients do not contaminate the data when measuring quality of life in cancer patients.[3] However, such observation and consequent investigations on cancer communication led him to propose a model consisting of two lines: first the ways cancer is disclosed to patients; and second the relationship between patients’ level of education and bad news consultation.[4]

Measuring health and patient-reported outcomes

Since his graduation from University of Glasgow, he introduced the topic to Iranian academic community and developed several many internationally known instruments for measuring health and patient-reported outcome in Iran. He is the pioneer of this emerging and demanding topic in Iran and now is a well-recognized scientist both nationally and internationally for his works in this field.[5]

Breast cancer

Epidemiology

Montazeri made a substantial contribution to breast cancer prevention in Iran. His publications on epidemiology of breast cancer, breast cancer preventive behaviors such as breast self-examination, and issues related to health-related quality of life in breast cancer patients including sexual function are consider as an asset for the country. He published more than any investigator on breast cancer in Iran. In fact his works on breast cancer provided important and basic information for understanding the current condition in Iran and making major contribution to improve women's health.[6][7][8]

Quality of life in breast cancer

He wrote several papers on quality of life in breast cancer patients. His bibliographic review of the literature on the quality of life in breast cancer patients from 1974 to 2007 is one of the most comprehensive existing piece of evidence that covers all aspects of breast cancer treatment and quality of life. He synthesized the data from 477 papers that contained almost 33 years of publications on the topic.[9]

Current position

Currently he is the Head of a non-governmental research institute namely: Health Metrics Research Center, Iranian Institute for Health Sciences Research, affiliated to Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research. He is also adjunct Professor at University of Science and Culture.
