American University of Antigua (AUA) is a private medical institution of higher education located in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda.[1] The sole program at AUA is the College of Medicine.

History

AUA was co-founded by Neal S. Simon,[2] a lawyer and former president of Ross University. AUA began instruction in 2004.[3] In 2008, Manipal Education and Medical Group purchased the college from New York based Greater Caribbean Learning Resources, Inc. and formed Maniple Education Americas, LLC.[4][5] In 2006, AUA College of Medicine was approved by the New York State Education Department and, in 2011, recognized by the Medical Board of California.

Accreditations and Approvals

The College of Medicine is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory and the AVICENNA Directory for medicine.[6]

In 2012, AUA was approved by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) as the leader in international medical education, the only medical school with this approval.[7]

In 2015, access to the Federal Direct Student Loan Program was finally granted to American students at AUA, a distinction that only 4 other offshore private Caribbean medical schools have.[8]

Campus

In January 2010, AUA opened its 17-acre (69,000 m2) campus. The $60 million facility houses more than 75,000 square feet (7,000 m2) of classrooms, a simulation lab, a multi-story library, study rooms, an amphitheater, a courtyard, a gym, tennis courts, and administrative and faculty offices.

In August 2011, AUA announced plans for an $18 million expansion of the Antigua campus.[9] The expansion will bring the campus to a total of 27-acres.[10]

Agreements

In 2013, AUA signed a landmark affiliation agreement with the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine that allows AUA clinical students to complete all of their core clinical rotations in the Greater Miami Area.[11]
