Amet is a city and a municipality in Rajsamand district in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

History

Old name : Ambapur It is historically famous for various reasons. One of them is Veer Patta the great king (under Mewar) of Amet who fought bravely against Mugals with the Maharana of Mewar Udai Singh, who founded Udaipur city famously known as "city of lakes". The great Maharana Pratap was son of Udai Singh.

Myth: As per one ancient story 2000 years ago King "Jai Singh was ruling on this place. Every early morning he used to go to Charbhuja temple for worshipping lord Shyam. It was continued till he got old enough to walk also. At that time a river called the "Gomati" was flowing on the way to the temple. On one rainy day when Gomati was overflowing, King Jai Singh could not go to the temple. Another morning he dreamt that he heard the voice of Lord Shyam and they promised him to come his place so that he can worship without any trouble. Another early morning when King Jai Singh got up and came out from his house, he saw the statue of lord Shyam was appearing from the ground and stopped when half of the statue came out of the ground. King Jai Shingh remembered the dream and he dug out the statue of lord and built the "Temple Of Shri Jai Singh Shyam". At this time "Mr. Rajendra Kumar Sharma" is one of the best priest (pujari ji) of Jai Singh Shyam Mandir amet. He is famous for doing many types of makeup (shringar) on Shri Jai Singh Shyam Ji and he is famous for doing unique designing on temple. He makes this temple like Hevan. Old name -Ambavati . Amet simply means aam (mango) bate(small hill).Still there are many hills wiyh mango trees at Amet .First it was ruled by Rathores than it was handed over to Jaggawats by Mewar state.

Tourist places

Vevar Mahadev, the temple of Shiva is very famous tourist place of Amet. It is situated near bank of the river "Chandrabhaga" and surrounded by Aravali hills and great amount of greenery makes a perfect place for all those who want to go near to nature and peace. Also Asharam ji ashram is near to the temple. Amet is also famous for temple of lord Jaisingh Shyam ji in the heart of Amet. Wadli wavli is also good place where the temples of lord Shanker and hanumanji are situated. Shiv nal and Shim mataji are also very picturesque places near Amet. There are a few small lakes, which fills during good monsoon -Ranerao lake, Salam sagar, Pratap sagar and two anicuts near Karani Mata bagh and Vevar Mahadev. The textile cloth market laxami bazar is a hot place for nearby villages. Jaisinghshyam goshala on Jilola rd is also a pleasant place to relax in Amet. Festival of Rangpanchmi is celebrated with great interest and colourfulness . The Thikana Amet organises the Gangaur festival with great pomp and show every year with full participation of the local people. Every year during Navratri festival five day cattle fair is organised. All nearby villages take part in it. It is held at mela ground opposite choti shikarbadi. Jaljulani ekadassi is also celebrated with great fervor and devotion.

Social activities

Amet is also active when it comes to social activities. various social organizations are working here mainiy RSS(Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), which is not only largest volunteer organization in the world and also famous for helping society to unite and help each other in times of crisis be it earthquake in Gujrat, or tsunami on southern corner of India. Amet has an active NGO called Navjeevan Seva sansthan working for education awareness in and around Amet. Diaspora from Amet is working all around the world and some are highly qualified including doctors and scientists.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Amet had a population of 16,669. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Amet has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Overview

Amet is one of the Indian cities which has a Martian crater named after it. The other cities/towns are Bhor, Broach, Kakori, Poona (Pune), Rayadurg, Sandila and Wer.
