Annisul Huq (Bengali: আনিসুল হকের; born 27 October 1952) is a Bangladeshi entrepreneur, TV show host and the current mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.[1][2]

Early life

Huq was born on 27 October 1952, in Noakhali. He graduated with a degree in Economics from Chittagong University.[3]

TV career

Huq was a regular host on Bangladesh Television beginning in the 1980s.[3] He has hosted interviews with politically significant personalities.

Business career

Huq established his own business, Mohammadi Group in 1986 and is currently the Chairperson of the company. Mohammadi Group employs over 12,000 individuals (7,000 in 2007[4]) in the textile and garments sector. The conglomerate is also involved in real estate, IT, a power generation company that directly contributes to the national grid and a distribution company that represents multiple foreign television channels. The Group has an independent TV Channel named Nagorik.

Huq is the former President of several apex bodies including the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA),[5] Federation of the Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Independent Power Producers Association. |

As mayor

As mayor Huq promised to build Dhaka into a clean, green and safe city,[6] although he received some flack for his involvement of foreigners.[7] 20,000 illegal billboards were removed as part of the clean-up project.[8] Mayor Huq has made it clear that he will not put up with resistance from vested interests in his clean-up efforts.[9]

Huq also promised to reduce corruption among governmental employees.[10]

Personal life

Huq is married to Rubana Huq. Together they have three children. Annisul Huq's youngest brother is Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq who is the current (17th) Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army.[11] [12][13]
