Arebhashe is a dialect of the hale Kannada language and Tulu language. It is spoken by about 400,000 people,[1] particularly the ‘Gowda’ community (among Hindus) in the regions of Kodagu district and Sullia of Dakshina Kannada.[2]

It is also spoken in the eastern parts of Kasaragod district[3] of Kerala state. In Sullia Taluk, as the majority of the population belongs to the Gowda community, most of others also generally communicate in the same dialect.[4] It is a 'half-tongue', (Are= half, Bhashe= speech) actually an admixture of hale Kannada and Tulu language. Hence, Arebhashe pronunciation is slightly distinct from Kannada (Example: hege in Kannada; henge in Arebhashe for 'How' in English. "aayithu" in Kannada is "aath" in arebashe, i.e. 'over' or 'completed' in English.).

Are Bhashe is written in the Kannada script itself. Arebhashe dialect is believed to be the language that originated while there was transformation of Hale Kannada to Hosa Kannada and according to some historians it has history of 500 years. It has many words that are Kannada words and Tulu words as well as a mixture of Malayalam language(Example: "Porlu" in tulu; "porlu" in Arebhashe; in Kannada "chanda"; in English "beautiful") (Example:"balamb" in Malayalam; "balamb" in Arebhashe; "badisu" in Kannada; "serve" in English)but due to mordernisation Arebhashe has lost it original fluency.Arebhashe is actually a hale kannada (old kannada)version with tulu words but due to new version of kannada many hale kannada words in Arebhashe have been replaced by new kannada words. If we go through the dravidian language origin chart we see tulu and old kannada as the oldest form from this we get to know that Arebhashe has its history dated more than 500 years.
