Arumanai is a panchayat town in Kanniyakumari district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Arumanai had a population of 14,576.

Geography

It is now a first grade panchayat town. The largest river of Kanyakumari district, the Kodayar, flows along the town's north-eastern and eastern boundary. Besides, two small brooks, the Kandasankadavu brook and Poovampara brook, (small tributaries of the Kodayar) flow through the town. Nedunkulam pond is another landmark near Arumanai. Marappadi, Kuzhichal, kunchaluvilai, Manankani, NalloorKonam, Thettivilai, Punniam, Nediasalai, Melavilai, Panankarai, valiavilai,Chuttoorkonam, Nedukulam, Chakkivilai are some of the important streets. Arumanai is surrounded by Manjalumoodu, Anducode, Karode, Vellamcode, Thiruvarambu, Kaliyal and Aatoor. The famous tourist places near by Arumanai are Thirparappu (around 4 km) and Chitharal malai kovil (around 3 km).

Agriculture

The town and its surroundings are very fertile and all species of flora of the West Coast grow here. However, the introduction of rubber cultivation in the hilly and semi-hilli areas of the district in the 1950s had marked a change in the utilization of the cultivable lands. Now rubber is raised as the main agricultural crop in almost all the villages and panchayat towns of Vilavancode taluk and Kalkulam taluks of the district. Arumanai is in Vilavancode taluk and since it is very close to the foothills of the Western Ghats, all the available lands in the town have been used for raising rubber.

Education

In and around Arumanai there are lot of higher secondary, secondary and primary schools with medium of study as English, Tamil and Malayalam. Christ International School, Malamary, HSC school arumanai, Govt HSC school Nediyasalai and National matriculation school Panangarai are the major schools located nearby Arumanai. It also has a college of arts and science namely Veluthampi Memorial College of Arts and Science(VTM) which offers degree courses in disciplines such as commerce, computer science, physics, michrobiology and biotechnology. It has been affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University of Tirunelveli.

Nedunkulam bhagavathi amman kovil, Melaviali krishnan kovil, Panangara bhathrakaali amman kovil are the famous temples nearby arumanai.

St. Joseph's Church is located in Kuzhichal,Kunchaluvilai Esaaki amman temple,. Its Roman Catholic Church under Parish Church of Packiapuram. This church belongs to Diociose of Kottar. This church has a history of 150 years. St. Joseph's Evening School was started to help the poor people get education and it has been ongoing for last 15 years.
