Arzamassky District (Russian: Арзама́сский райо́н) is an administrative[1] and municipal[3] district (raion), one of the forty-three in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southern central part of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,016.9 square kilometers (778.7 sq mi).[1] Its administrative center is the city of Arzamas (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 43,723 (2010 Census);[4] 46,086 (2002 Census);[7] 54,491 (1989 Census).[8]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Arzamassky District is one of the forty-three in the oblast.[1] The city of Arzamas serves as its administrative center,[1] despite being incorporated separately as a city of oblast significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[9]

As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Arzamassky Municipal District.[3] The city of oblast significance of Arzamas is incorporated separately from the district as Arzamas Urban Okrug.[3]

Transportation

A narrow gauge railway serving the Peshelan gypsum mine is located in the village of Bebyayevo.
