Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis is a 706-bed[1] medical facility in Memphis, Tennessee. This hospital, built in 1979, is now the flagship of Baptist Memorial Health Care since the closure of the Madison Campus in the Medical District, Memphis in 2000, which dated from 1912.[2] Baptist Memorial Healthcare operates 14 Hospitals and numerous clinics in the three states surrounding the Memphis area.[3] The former Madison Campus has been redeveloped by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.[4]

Facilities

The hospital has full Emergency room services, except for a trauma department.[5]

Baptist Memorial Healthcare operates a college Baptist College of Health Sciences centered on Health Professions nearby the site of the former Madison Campus.[6] The school offers Bachelors Degrees in Health care management, Nursing, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy, Radiography, Respiratory Care, and Sonography.[7]

A $7.54 million CyberKnife surgery suite proposal has been filed with the Tennessee Health Services Development Agency. The CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System is knife-and-scalpel-free, and uses beams of high-dose radiation to remove tumors anywhere in the body.[8]

Elvis Presley

Elvis was, without a doubt, Baptist Memorial Hospital's most famous patient, spending five visits there in the '70s. They included:

  • March, 1970: three days, for an eye infection that turned out to be glaucoma of his left eye;
  • October, 1973: two weeks, for pneumonia;
  • January/February, 1975: two weeks, for high blood pressure and an impacted colon;
  • August/September, 1975: two weeks, for exhaustion; and
  • April, 1977: five days, for fatigue and intestinal flu.

Elvis's body was taken there to Trauma room #2 on the day of his death, August 16, 1977.
