Professional wrestling career

WWE

NXT (2012–2016)

Pestock signed with WWE's developmental system WWE NXT in August 2012.[19] Using the ring name Baron Corbin, he made his in-ring debut on October 18, 2012, at a live event, losing to Dante Dash. He made his televised debut on the May 8, 2013, episode of NXT, in a losing effort against Damien Sandow.[20] On May 29, Corbin unsuccessfully participated in a #1 contendership battle royal for the NXT Championship, being eliminated early in the match by Mason Ryan.[21] He then made several appearances as an enhancement talent, with a battle royal to determine the #1 contender to the NXT Championship on May 8, 2014 being his last televised match prior to his re-debut.[22]

Corbin on March 27, 2015 during the WrestleMania 31 weekend.

After a long absence, a repackaged Corbin returned on September 11, 2014 at NXT TakeOver: Fatal 4-Way, where he defeated CJ Parker.[23] Corbin again defeated Parker in a rematch on the September 18 episode of NXT.[24] Corbin would then win numerous matches against enhancement talents, each in a short amount of time,[25][26][27] until crossing paths with Bull Dempsey, who was also winning his matches quickly. This led to a rivalry between the two to see who could one-up the other in having the least amount of time to win their matches.[28][29] At NXT TakeOver: R Evolution, Corbin had a staredown with Dempsey after winning his match against Tye Dillinger.[30] Their highly anticipated one on one match finally took place on January 14 which Corbin won, breaking Dempsey's undefeated streak in the process.[31] Corbin participated in a number one contender's tournament for the NXT Championship, defeating Bull Dempsey in the first round but then being eliminated by Adrian Neville in the semi-final, ending Corbin's undefeated streak.[32] At NXT TakeOver: Rival, Corbin defeated Dempsey in a No Disqualification match to end their feud.[33] He later competed in a André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal qualification tournament at WrestleMania 31 Axxess but lost in the first round to Finn Bálor. Hideo Itami won the tournament[34]

On the May 6 episode of NXT, Rhyno defeated Dempsey and then called out Corbin for a match at NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable.[35] On the next week's NXT, Corbin defeated Solomon Crowe, turning heel in the process after showing a more cocky persona, after the crowd turned on him and his short matches. After the match, Corbin faced off with Rhyno and brawled with him, starting their feud.[36] At NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, Corbin defeated Rhyno via pinfall to end the feud.[37]

On the August 12, 2015 episode of NXT, Corbin defeated Axel Tischer then subdued Steve Cutler, hitting both men with his finisher. He then stated that nobody could kick out of his finisher, End of Days. Samoa Joe came out, challenged Corbin, and began a brawl, locking Corbin in the Coquina Clutch.[38] The next week, Corbin attacked Joe after his match, hitting his finisher and setting up a match for NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn.[39] At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, Joe won via submission with the Coquina Clutch.[40]

Corbin then teamed up with his former rival Rhyno as a tag team to take place in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament.[41] On September 2 episode of NXT, they defeated The Ascension in the first round.[42] They then defeated the team of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa in the second round.[43] On October 7, 2015 at NXT TakeOver: Respect, Corbin and Rhyno defeated Chad Gable and Jason Jordan to advance to the finals of the tournament, where they lost to Finn Bálor and Samoa Joe that same night.[44] Corbin had an online feud with singer Corey Taylor that resulted in Taylor slapping Corbin in the face during a Samoe Joe vs Corbin match at NXT's show at the Aftershock Festival on October 23, 2015.[45][46][47]

After NXT TakeOver: Respect, a battle royal was held to determine who would be the No. 1 Contender for the NXT Championship. Baron Corbin participated in the battle royal, and made it to the final two before being eliminated by Apollo Crews. Afterwards, an infuriated Corbin attacked Crews during his NXT Championship match and cost Apollo the title, igniting a feud between the two. Baron Corbin later went on to defeat Apollo Crews at NXT TakeOver: London.

On January 2016, Corbin would set his sights on the NXT Championship being involved in a triple threat match between Sami Zayn and Samoa Joe on the January 27 episode of NXT to determine the #1 contender for Finn Balor's NXT Championship but Corbin didn't win the match after Zayn and Joe both applied their submission holds on Corbin at the same time losing the title opportunity, William Regal didn't give Corbin another chance for the championship as he claimed that Regal will "regret" his decision when Regal introduced the debuting Austin Aries on the March 2 episode of NXT and suddenly Corbin attacks him from behind, sparking a feud between the two which led to a match between the two at NXT TakeOver: Dallas in which Corbin lost to Aries via roll-up. On April 13 episode of NXT Corbin defeated Tucker Knight, this would mark Corbin's final appearance in NXT.

Main Roster (2016–present)

Corbin made his main roster debut at WrestleMania 32, appearing as an unannounced entrant in the André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal and lastly eliminating Kane to win the 3rd annual André the Giant Memorial Trophy.[48] He then debuted on Raw the following night, battling to a double countout against Dolph Ziggler. Corbin continued his assault after the match, hitting Ziggler with an End of Days on the arena floor.[49]

Corbin made his Smackdown debut the following week defeating Zack Ryder. Corbin faced Dolph Ziggler at the Payback 2016 pre-show in a losing effort after a roll-up. The next night, Ziggler eliminated Corbin from a battle royal to determine the number 1 contender to the WWE United States Championship. After his elimination, Corbin proceeded to viciously attack Ziggler, causing his elimination at the hands of eventual winner Rusev. Corbin defeated Ziggler decisively on the May 10 episode of Raw, which evened the score between the two at 1-1. At Extreme Rules Corbin defeated Ziggler via pinfall in a no-disqualification match. The next night on RAW, Ziggler would confront Corbin and challenge him to a match on the May 30 episode of RAW with Corbin accepting. The match occurred the following week with Corbin winning by disqualification after Dolph Ziggler low blowed him at the start of the match.

Personal life

Pestock's father died in 2008 due to complications from Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease.[50] Pestock wears his father's wedding ring on a necklace as a tribute. Corbin credits Billy Gunn, Bill DeMott, Dusty Rhodes and Corey Graves with helping him develop his wrestling character and personality.[51] Corbin also worked at Clarinda Academy in the early 2000's after college.
