Ben Toolis (born 31 March 1992) is an Australian-born rugby union player who plays for Edinburgh Rugby in the RaboDirect Pro12. He plays primarily at loose head Lock.

He is eligible to represent Scotland as his mother, Linda, is from Carluke in Lanarkshire.[1]

Overview

Ben Toolis switched from Queensland Premier Grade side GPS Old Boys to Edinburgh Rugby in 2013. In his early days he played for Australia Youth (U18) and Junior (U20)in volleyball games but had an impressive background of rugby. The Brisbane born, Ben was in the Australian National Rugby Academy squad and played in the IRB Pacific Nations Cup. Subsequently, he was able to make it to the Premier Grade semi-finals in 2012 and 2013, a privilege he shared with his brother.[2]

The lanky 6 ft 7in Ben with a Scottish root has a one-year assignment with the Edinburgh Rugby. He is also qualified to play for the national team of Scotland. He is scheduled to undergo the present club's Elite Development Player programme and is expected to follow in the footsteps of EDP graduates like Grant Gilchrist, Tom Brown and Matt Scott and represent Scotland.[2] "They're both very athletic and mobile, which are important attributes in the modern game," were Edinburgh assistant coach, Stevie Scott's words about Ben and his brother Alex.[3][4][5]

After an impressive run of games for his club Edinburgh he was called up to the Scotland squad for the 2015 Six Nations Championship, going on to make his international debut against Italy.[6]

Toolis' first try for Edinburgh came during the European Challenge Cup semi-final thrashing of Newport Gwent Dragons in April 2015, racing onto his own chargedown and grounding the ball just before it trundled over the dead ball line.[1]
