Rugby league Burundi started in 2015. The game was introduced by Jean du Christ Rusiga in the commune of Kinindo, Burundi.

History

Startimg in 2015, The governing body has named themselves the Burundi Rugby League Association (BRLA). The first club announced is the Kinindo Impala of the Kinindo Rugby League Association run by Kris Mathieu Ncanyi and David Ntuzwenimana.

The Kinindo program has trained more than 30 young men from Ecole Lumiere de Kinindo, Ecole les Minions, and Ecole primaire Officiel de Kinindo. Of that 30, 20 have been of high enough standard to train in the full squad.

The governing body, BRLA asbl, in collaboration with Rugger Sports and Culture, has planned two games for the Kinindo Impala Rugby league club against Youth Team sports club of Kamenge at the end of November 2015.

Along with the training of players four referees have been developed. One young women Claudine Nduwimana will be officiating the game as a touch judge.

Looking to the future, the BRLA is hoping to be recognized by the Rugby League International Federation.

Teams

The national team is called the Ama Suguru (English: Wild Goats).

Two more teams are planned to be added. Another in Kamenge and one in Bujumbura.
