Overview
Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Busia District became operational in 1997. Before 20 March 1997, the district was Busia County in Tororo District. The distance from the farthest parts of Busia District to the then district headquarters in Tororo was one of the persuasive arguments for granting district status to Busia County. The district has three constituencies in the Ugandan parliament, namely:
- Samia Bugwe North
- Busia Municipality
- Samia Bugwe South

During the 1991 national population census, the population in the district was estimated at 163,600. In 2002, the national census estimated the population at 225,000. In 2012, the mid-year population of the district was estimated at 297,600.[2]
