Bweyogerere is the name of a township in south-central Uganda. It is one of the six townships or wards that constitute Kira Municipality in Wakiso District. The other five wards are Kimwaanyi, Kira, Kireka, Kirinnya and Kyaliwajjala.

Location

Bweyogerere is located on the Kampala-Jinja Highway, approximately 13 kilometres (8.1 mi), east of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.[1] The coordinates of the township are:0°21'09.0"N 32°39'49.0"E (Latitude:0.352500; Longitude:32.663611).[2]

Overview

Bweyogerere is on a hill that rises to a peak of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) above sea level. The higher reaches of the hill are occupied by upscale homes with manicured lawns and fenced yards. The middle reaches are occupied by middle-class homes, apartment buildings and hotels. The lower reaches of the hill has lower social class homes in tight-fitting one- or two-room rental units. On the lower areas one finds shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and small-scale industries. In this same area, on the south-facing side of the hill, the Kampala-Jinja Highway traverses the township. Mandela National Stadium is located in the southwestern corner of Bweyogerere, on the southern side of the Highway.

Kampala Industrial and Business Park, one of the designated industrial areas within the greater Kampala Metropolitan Area is in Namanve, to the east and southeast of Bweyogerere.[3] The Kampala Northern Bypass Highway, a 21 kilometres (13 mi) dual carriageway road forming an arc around the northern half of the city of Kampala, leaves the Kampala-Jinja Highway at Bweyogerere and begins a winding journey that ends in Nateete on the Kampala-Masaka Highway.[4]

Population

During the 2002 national census, Bweyogerere comprised 26.7% of the population of Kira Municipality. In 2011, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics estimated the population of Kira Municipality, of which Bweyogerere is a part, at 179,800.[5] In 2011, it was estimated that the population of Bweyogerere Township was approximately 48,000.
