- The Colony of Santo Domingo − Captaincy General of Santo Domingo (1493–1795) — on the island of Hispaniola of the Greater Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea.
- French settlements in the western third of Hispaniola began in 1625, recognized and ceded by Spain to France via Treaty of Ryswick in 1697.
- Under the rule of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, based in colonial Mexico, from 1520–1795.
- Acquired by France via Treaty of Basel, allowing Spain to cede the remaining two-thirds of the eastern colony as a consequence of the French Revolutionary Wars and annexed it into Saint-Domingue (1795–1809).
- Reconquest by Spain and returned it to Spanish colonial rule (1809–1821), until a brief independence as Spanish Haiti.
- After a two-decade Haitian unification, this part of Hispaniola is today known as the Dominican Republic
