Finches are a form taxon composed of unrelated but similar-looking songbirds. They eat mostly small seed, usually live in trees or shrubs but are able to get along well on the ground, and usually have rather dark plumage colors without camouflaging patterns. Some however show bright, typically reddish hues.

"Finches" as used by scientists refers to the family Fringillidae which include numerous birds not called "finches", such as the crossbills and siskins. See also Category:Fringillidae.
