Many former pupils of Nottingham High School have gained recognition in such fields as the military, politics, business, science, culture and sport. Among the most famous are Albert Ball (1896 - 1917), a First World War fighter pilot who was the United Kingdom's most prolific flying ace at the time of his death and Ed Balls, the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom.
