Chapecó is a major city in the western area of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, located 630 km west of Florianópolis, the capital of the state.

As of 2014, it has a population of around 202.009 inhabitants. The city itself has an area of 625 km².

History

The city was founded by Italian immigrants on August 25, 1917. Most people are descendants of Italian, German and Polish immigrants.

Economy

Chapecó has 210,188 inhabitants and approximately 400,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area of Chapecó,[1] and the city hub of this region of the state, where there are about two hundred municipalities, which together total more than 2 million inhabitants. In this region of the state was the birth and are still installed some processing and exporting industrial units of pig meat, poultry and derivatives, is known as the Brazilian agro-industrial capital, the city is the headquarters of the Cooperative Aurora Alimentos and has a unit of Brazil Foods SA, which in its unit produces one of its biggest products since 1973 (40 years old), champion in export and sale.

Its industrial park is diversified, and the sectors that stand out the metal-mechanic (which has been specializing in production of equipment for refrigerators), the plastics and packaging, transport, furniture, beverages, software and biotechnology. The construction and trade are also important source of income.

The region has great prospects derived from the central position in the Mercosul, the high potential and the availability of electrical energy, favorable conditions for agricultural production, among other factors.

In 10 years the gross domestic product (GDP) of Chapeco in 2001 went from 1,727,412 to 4,505,579 in 2011 (in thousand reais) Per capita GDP has more than doubled. Are 8500 active companies and relying on branches in other cities based in Chapecó goes to 9000 companies, in more than 500 branches.

Other

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chapecó. Chapecó is served by Serafin Enoss Bertaso Airport.
