Children's Hunger Fund (CHF) is a Christian non-profit organization founded in 1991 by Dave Phillips. CHF provides resources and training to local churches in the United States and in developing countries to help them meet the needs of impoverished communities.[1] As of 2013, CHF has distributed more than $1 billion in aid to children and families in need.[2]

History

From 1992 to 1994, Dave Phillips worked with one employee in a small garage. They helped eight churches made up of 200-300 families. In response to the Los Angeles riots of 1992, CHF increased its food distribution program in South Central Los Angeles.[3] When the 1994 Northridge earthquake struck the San Fernando Valley, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) asked Children's Hunger Fund to participate in relief efforts. Since inception, CHF has expanded to more than 72 countries worldwide.[4]

Volunteering

CHF accepts volunteers from churches, community groups, and schools into warehouses in Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Antonio. Volunteers pack boxes of food called Food Paks on an assembly line as well as bag dried beans and pasta, wrap toys, and sort donated product. CHF has had over 18,000 volunteers come through its doors to volunteer their time.[5]

The annual toy wrap event is CHF's largest volunteer event. Each year, thousands of volunteers gather to wrap toys donated by corporate manufactures or retailers. At the event, CHF names a Volunteer of the Year, honoring them for their service and commitment to feed hungry children.
