Chilham railway station serves the area around the village of Chilham in Kent, England, including Chilham itself, Shottenden, Old Wives Lees,and Bagham. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Southeastern.

History

The station was opened by the South Eastern Railway (SER) on 1 December 1846, and is on the SER Ashford to Margate line. The platforms are connected by a concrete footbridge - a typical product of the Southern Railway concrete factory at Exmouth Junction. There are level crossings near both ends of the station.

The station is unmanned. A PERTIS passenger-operated ticket machine, issuing 'Permits to Travel' - which are exchanged on-train or at manned stations for travel tickets - is located just inside the entrance to the Canterbury-bound platform from the car park.

Accidents and incidents

  • On 11 August 1858, an excursion train was derailed near Chilham. Three people were killed.[1]
  • On 15 July 1970, an electric multiple unit was in collision with a lorry on an occupation crossing between Chartham and Chilham due to an error by the crossing keeper. The driver of the lorry and the guard of the train were killed.[2]
  • On 26 July 2015, electric multiple unit 375 703 was in collision with a herd of cattle on the line between Wye and Chilham. Two carriages were derailed. There were no injuries amongst the 70 passengers.[3][4][5]

Services

As of December 2011 the current typical off peak services from this station is one train per hour to London Charing Cross via Tonbridge and one train to Canterbury West.[6]
