Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Chirkunda had a population of 39,121. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Chirkunda has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 71% and female literacy of 56%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. The official language and spoken language is Khortha,santhali,etc - a linguistic blend of Bengali and Magahi. Other languages which are used here are Bengali and Hindi. Hinduism is the prominent religion here, followed by Islam.

Economy

Chirkunda is situated amidst rich coal mines of Jharia and Raniganj. Major industries in and around this area includes refractory making, coal making, iron and steel plants, food processing, retailing, and service industry. Due to its strategic location, Chirkunda has many big business houses of the Dhanbad district such as the Sharma's, Chulania's, Gaddhyan's, Kharkia's, Choudhary's, Nigania's to name a few. Some major factories in this belt includes Fatka Refractories, Associated Ceramic, Chirkunda Ceramic Works, Maithan Ceramic Ltd., Maithan Alloys Ltd., Arun Fuels, Bharat Ceramic, Shree Ganesh Hardcoke, etc. KFS, once India's largest refractory producer when it was in operation is situated in this area. Mc Nally Bharat Engineering is also situated in the outskirts of Chirkunda. The presence of DVC's Maithon Dam and Panchet Dam, power stations is another major factor for the development of industries in and around this area. Maithon Power Limited, a Joint venture of Tata Power and DVC Maithon holds brighter prospects for the future and prevalent industries.Many educated professionals are also living in Chirkunda. Nearby areas include Kumardhubi, Mugma, Nirsa, Barakar, Kulti and Panchet.

Tourist places

Maithon (Mai Ka Sthan - A place where Mother Goddess stays) Literally meaning Mother's Abode, it is the biggest reservoir of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). This dam, designed for flood control, has been built on the Barakar river. It has a unique underground power station which is first of its kind in SE Asia. Just a little away from the dam lies an ancient temple at Kalyaneshwari. The lake at Maithon is spread over an area of 65 km2. There is a rest house on an island in the lake. Boating and fishing facilities are available. Close by, a Deer Park and a bird sanctuary are also situated. Prior permission is required for visiting the powerhouse. The permits are issued from the office of the Assistant Public Relations Officer and guide services are also made available.

In winters it attracts huge numbers of picnickers and generally is overcrowded between December 25 to January 5 every year.

Kalyaneswari Temple

Close to Maithan Dam, 46 km away from Dhanbad,is the famous temple presiding deity of which is Maa Kalyaneshwari.It draws a large number of devotees throughout the year.So famous is the temple that even the name Maithan is said to have been derived from Mai-Ka-Than meaning Abode of the Goddess. There is also a deer park and a bird sanctuary in the vicinity.

Panchet Dam

This is also a census town situated 9 km South of Chirkunda and about 54 km southeast of Dhanbad. The Panchet Dam, around which the Ttwnship has developed, is located here.
