Coke Studio is a Pakistani music television series which features live studio-recorded music performances by various artists. The show was produced by Rohail Hyatt until Season 6, and is now produced by the Pakistani band Strings. It is sponsored by Coca Cola Pakistan. Starting in 2008, Coke Studio has been popular throughout the country, receiving critical acclaim and frequently being rebroadcast on numerous television and radio stations.[1]
The program focuses on a fusion of the diverse musical influences in Pakistan, including eastern classical, folk, qawwali, bhangra, Sufi and contemporary hip hop, rock and pop music.[2] The show provides a platform for renowned as well as upcoming and less mainstream artists, of various genres, regions and languages, to collaborate musically in live studio recording sessions.[3]
The first season of the show premiered on 8 June 2008.[citation needed] The third season aired on 6 June 2010 having the same format as that of the second season. Season Four aired on 22 May 2011. On 13 May 2012, the show commenced its fifth season. The sixth season started in October 2013.[4] The seventh season of Coke Studio Pakistan aired on 21 September 2014 on various Pakistani channels.[5]
Video and MP3 files for each song are available for free download on the Coke Studio website after each episode airs, along with additional material. The videos are also available on the show's official channel on YouTube, where they have gained millions of views and been frequently commented on.[6][citation needed]
Following its success first in Brazil and then in Pakistan, Coke Studio has now become an international franchise, with other countries adopting local versions. It is produced by Rohail Hyatt, founder of the first Pakistani pop band Vital Signs and from Season 7 by Strings. Its featured artists on each episode are backed by a house band and guest artists.

History
The concept of the show had similarities with the Brazilian show, Estúdio Coca-Cola which first premiered on MTV Brasil in March 2007,[2] although the format of the show is fundamentally different from the original Brazilian format, where performances were held on a concert style platform, whereas in the Pakistani version of the series, performances are held in a closed studio. The format of Coke Studio Pakistan was devised by the Coca-Cola Company in Pakistan and Rohail Hyatt, founder of the first Pakistani pop band Vital Signs, along with his wife Umber Hyatt. Both were the executive producers of the show.[7]
The first season followed a format adapted from the Brazilian version premiered on June 5, 2008 but in the second season of the show live audiences were excluded and performances were held in a closed studio platform, this format is currently being followed for the show. International fame
Following success in Pakistan after its first launch, Coke Studio has now become an international franchise. The Pakistani show has amassed a large fan following in neighboring India.[8] The success of the show prompted Coca Cola to launch the Indian version Coke Studio India, with a similar format, though not as popular as its neighboring counterpart.[9] The Indian version has been produced by MTV India in partnership with Red Chillies Entertainment.[10] In April 2012, an Arab version of the show, Coke Studio Bel 3arabi was launched in the Middle East featuring performances by various Arabic and international music artists, produced by producer and songwriter Michel Elefteriades. Coke Studio episodes are recorded at Studio 146, located in the Korangi Industrial Area of Karachi.
Coke studio has also been seen as an economic process of transnationalism and as a transnational television production, with its production systems being created and augmented by global flows of artists, technology, distribution and economics.[11] Within this process, economic structures are created, opened and even reoriented; influences are borrowed and music produced; communities and heritage discovered and remained – this is done intellectually and physically, and more importantly, transnationally.[11]
