Cranbrook is a new town being developed in East Devon, initially consisting of 2,900 residential properties, rising to up to 6,551 properties by 2027,[1][dead link] with associated infrastructure to support the housing. It is located 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) east-north-east of the centre of Exeter, just north of the village of Rockbeare, between the B3174 road (London Road) and the West of England Main Line railway

The requirement to build extra housing in this area formed part of Devon's 2001–2016 Structure Plan and was included in East Devon's Local Plan 1995-2001. The first houses as well as St Martin's Primary school were completed in 2012[2] and at least 500 houses had been occupied by December 2013.[3] Cranbrook is in the Broadclyst ward of East Devon but this may change in the next census due to housing developments.

Accessibility and transport

Cranbrook railway station on the Exeter - Waterloo line opened in 2015 . The project cost over £5,million. [4]

Stagecoach provides two buses to serve this housing estate. They are: the 4 to Axminster via Honiton, and the 4a to Honiton. These two buses run from Monday to Saturday all year round. However on Sunday, the only bus to serve here is the 4 which only comes as far as Cranbrook. Stagecoach also provides another bus which is the 4b. This bus only runs Early morning. This bus (like the number 4) goes to Axminster via Honiton. To note, all buses go to Exeter Bus and Coach Station.

There is a cycle path connecting Cranbrook to the rest of Exeter which runs alongside Honiton Road.

Cranbrook is near Exeter International Airport.

Facilities

The first phase of the Cranbrook development is known as "Younghayes". A primary school (St Martin's) opened in September 2012. The Younghayes Centre is complete and is used as a meeting point for clubs.

The second phase will include a second primary school and a secondary school.[5]
