DD Podhigai (பொதிகை தொலைக்காட்சி) is Doordarshan's Tamil language regional channel.[1] It is broadcast both terrestrially and via satellite.

History

Doordarshan Kendra Chennai's (சென்னை தொலைக்காட்சி நிலையம்) Regional satellite Network, DD-5, was launched on 15 April 1993. This service is viewed in India and some parts of the world. DD-5 took a new identity in Tamil and was renamed DD Podhigai on 15 January 2000.

History of Channel Name

The name Podhigai was suggested by the viewers themselves. It is named after Podhigai Hills situated in Tirunelveli district. This hill range is part of Western Ghats of Southern India. This hill range is famous for its association with Sage Agasthya. Legend has it that Agastya created Tamil in this hill. River Tamirabarani originates here.

Programmes

The channel offers a variety of programmes with serials, films, infotainment programmes, news and current affairs being most prominent. It is the only regional language satellite channel with terrestrial transmission. Terrestrial transmission is limited to major cities in Tamil Nadu.

  • KANNANIN AARAMUDHU - popular Hindu religious discourse by Sri. U.Ve.Velukkudi Krishnan - CDs of the programme is now available at DD Podhigai
  • KANNAPIRAN KADHAIYAMUDHAM is the present current religious discourse programme on Bhagavatham presented by Shri. Velukkudi Krishnan Swamigal being telecast at 6:30pm from Monday to Thursday. The programme is likely to end by mid of March 2014.
  • SRI RAMANIN ARULAMUDHAM is a programme being telecast in the morning at 6:30am and it is presented by Shri. Velukkudi Krishnan Swamigal. The highlight of the programme is the wide video coverage of Ramar & Hanuman Temples throughout Tamil Nadu and across the nation. Devotees can worship all the temples and deities from their home. This is a boon to the aged people who could travel and for busy people tied up with tight engagements.
  • SEIDHIGAL - National news in Tamil - telecast timings are 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00noon, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:30pm, 8:00pm & 10:00pm on DD Podhigai & Metro Scan on DD News at 6:05pm. News is trusted by one and all including other channels for it authenticity.
  • AAROKKIA BHARATHAM - A very popular Health programme telecast on DD Podhigai at 7:30pm from Monday to Friday and repeated in the morning. The programme highlights all medical aids, facilities, Doctor advises with live phone in interaction and also clears all the doubts of lakhs of viewers across the nation.
  • THULLAATHA MANAMUM THULLUM - a popular programme with different music troupes and singers presenting Film Songs and many episodes with film song clippings too. This programme gives an opportunity to young upcoming singers apart from enriching the programme with renowned film singers.
  • ASATHAL SAMAIYAL - popular kitchen program, shown on Sundays.
  • BSNL SPORTS QUIZ - A very popular successful sports quiz program running continuously for the past thirteen (13) years (as on 2014) every Saturday, anchored by Dr. Sumanth C. Raman. In December 2013, it has completed 600 episodes (weekly) and still running. Now BSNL Sports Quiz will be telecast on SUNDAY's night 9:05pm to 10:00pm on DD Podhigai Satellite Channel. The programme is branded and sponsored by BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) Tamil Nadu Circle continuously with weekly prizes also given by BSNL.
  • VETRIYUM VAAZHVUM (Victory and Life) Speaker by Sam P. Chelladurai
  • EDHIROLI (Feedback) is the two member host show where one of the member is reading feed backs written on postcards from the viewers.
  • Vayalum Vaazhvum is the agriculture awareness program most popular in early days. Now the concept is much modernized with latest techniques, advantages in the form of PON VILAIYUM BHOOMI.
