North Korea's defense industry predates the Korean War, but has emerged as a supplier to the North Korean armed forces beginning in the 1970s,[1] but more so after the fall of the Soviet Union and to supplement those purchased from China.[2] Most equipment are a copies of Soviet and Chinese built military hardware.

There are no indigeous aircraft built in North Korea, factories supply components or parts to aircraft flown.

  • Ch’onjin - small factory used to build spare parts and rebuilt aircraft for the Air Force[5]
  • Kusong - reported facility producing spare aircraft[6]
  • Pyonghyon - reported facility producing spare aircraft[7]
  • Tokhyon - used to build spare parts and rebuilt aircraft for the Air Force[8]

Seventh Machine Industry Bureau in Panghyon was built 1986 and has aircraft parts factory and rumors have the plant producing 2 fighter aircraft.
