On February 15, 2003, an Israeli tank went over a 100 kilograms (220 lb) explosive device planted on the side of the road leading to the Israeli settlement of Dugit, in the northern part of Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip. The tank went up in flames, killing its crew of an officer and three soldiers. A second explosive device was discovered by Israeli troops and safely defused.

The Palestinian Hamas movement claimed to have carried out the attack as a revenge for the killing of two of its members earlier in the week. According to Palestinian sources the tank was a Merkava[1] but according to Israeli sources the destroyed tank was a Magach 7, a rebuilt Patton tank.[2]
