Dulquer Salmaan (born 28 July 1986), also known as DQ,[1] is an Indian film actor who predominantly appears in Malayalam films.[2][3]

The son of actor Mammootty, Dulquer initially took a three-month course at the Barry John Acting Studio, Mumbai in 2009.[4] He made his acting debut in debutant director Srinath Rajendran's film Second Show (2012) for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He also received the award for his Tamil debut Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014).[5][6] Dulquer's second film, Ustad Hotel (2012), got him nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.[7]

Dulquer established himself as a lead actor in the industry with the commercial success of films such as ABCD (2013), Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi (2013), Bangalore Days (2014), Vikramadithyan (2014), O Kadhal Kanmani (2015), and Charlie (2015).[8] He became the recipient of the 46th Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Charlie.[9]

Early life

Dulquer Salmaan was born on 28 July 1986 in Kochi, Kerala, India to actor Mammootty and Sulfath.[10] Dulquer has an elder sister, Surumi. He completed his secondary level education from Sishya School in Chennai.[11] He then moved to the US and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Purdue University. After graduation, he worked in the U.S. and later moved to Dubai, to do an I.T. related business. He later decided to pursue a career in acting and attended a three-month course at the Barry John Acting Studio, Mumbai.[12] He stated in an interview that he chose acting because " ... somewhere down the lane my life became monotonous and routine", though he never wanted to come into films.[13]

Film career

In 2011, Salmaan signed debutante Srinath Rajendran's Second Show (2012) in which he played the role of Harilal (Lalu), a gangster. Asked about in an interview about his "unconventional entry with a bunch of newcomers", Salmaan stated that it was his conscious decision as he felt that " ... when an actor debuts, he has to earn the right to be a hero and not get it through a shortcut route."[13] The film received mixed reviews.[14] A critic for Sify stated, " ... it is Dulquer's amazing screen presence and a matured acting style that makes the movie an engaging watch",[15] while Paresh C Palicha of Rediff criticized Salmaan's performance, "There is no denying that he [Salmaan] looks dapper and has an attractive baritone (a gift of his gene pool). But that does not translate into good performance or acting."[16] However, the film was commercially successful and won Salmaan the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.[17][18]

He next starred in Anwar Rasheed's Ustad Hotel (2012) in which he starred alongside Thilakan and Nithya Menen. The film, which received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, was also a major commercial success.[19] Salmaan's performance was also appreciated. Anil R Nair, writing for The New Indian Express, stated, "The youthful and glamorous Dulquer has come out of his father’s shadow in the role of Faisi."[20] For his performance, Salmaan received his first nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.[21] Salmaan's third film in 2012 was Theevram, a crime thriller directed by Roopesh Peethambaran. The film, which released on November 2012, received mixed reviews and became a commercial failure.[22]

Salmaan signed on to appear in Martin Prakkat's comedy drama ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi (2013) in which he made his singing debut with "Johnny Mone Johnny". Both the song and the film became popular.[14][23] Though the film received mixed reviews, Salmaan's performance was appreciated. Sify stated: "it is Dulquer Salmaan's show all the way and in all fairness the young actor has given his heart and soul into his character."[24] He also appeared in the anthology film 5 Sundarikal (2013). Salmaan was part of Amal Neerad's segment Kullante Bharya, loosely based on an ancient Chinese short story, The Tall Woman and Her Short Husband.[25] The film was critically acclaimed, with praise directed towards Kullante Bharya. Aswin J Kumar of The Times of India wrote, " ... it's the tale of the nameless woman, 'Kullante Bharya' that stays with the viewer." He also praised Salmaan's performance as a photographer who was bound to his wheelchair.[26] Salmaan then collaborated with Sameer Thahir for Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi (2013), a road movie.[27] The film and Salmaan's performance was appreciated.[28]

He starred in cinematographer Alagappan's romantic drama Pattam Pole (2013), co-starring debutante Malavika Mohanan. The film, which Salmaan described as the "the first love story" he was acting in, received mixed reviews and was a commercial failure.[23][29][30] His first release in 2014 was Salalah Mobiles, with Nazriya Nazim playing the female lead. The critically panned film was also a box-office failure.[31] He then starred in the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014) directed by Balaji Mohan. While the Malayalam version Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram was a commercial failure, the Tamil version received positive reviews and became a sleeper hit.[32][33] IANS called Salmaan "a treat to watch" and added, "He earns extra brownie points for dubbing in his own voice and speaking flawless Tamil."[34] He went on to receive his second Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.[6]

In Anjali Menon's ensemble romantic comedy drama Bangalore Days (2014), Salmaan played Arjun (Aju) with Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim as his cousins. The film received positive reviews and emerged as one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, grossing around 500 million (US$7.4 million).[35] Later that same year, Salmaan collaborated with Unni Mukundan and Namitha Pramod on Lal Jose's Vikramadithyan. It was a commercial success.[32] He then performed in what he called his "most challenging film yet" with Renjith's Njaan (2014).[36] Salmaan's performance received favorable reviews and earned him several accolades, including a second Best Actor nomination at Filmfare.[14][37]

Salmaan's next film was Jenuse Mohamed's romantic comedy 100 Days of Love (2015) opposite Nithya Menen. The film was an economic success.[38] He paired once again with Menen in Mani Ratnam's O Kadhal Kanmani (2015). Salmaan's second Tamil release, the film opened to positive reviews and became successful at the box office.[39] About Salmaan's performance, The Hindu's critic Baradwaj Rangan wrote: "Dulquer Salmaan checks off all boxes in the Can You Be The Next Madhavan? questionnaire", though he believed the film primarily belonged to Menen.[40] Salmaan next played the titular character in Martin Prakkat's Charlie (2015). The film generated positive response from critics and received 8 Kerala State Film Awards, with Salmaan receiving his first Best Actor Award. It was also a financial success, with earnings of around 420 million (US$6.2 million) worldwide.[41]

Salmaan achieved further success in 2016 when he reunited with Sameer Thahir for Kali. The film (co-starring Sai Pallavi) proved to be the highest opener for a Malayalam film.[42] He then starred in Rajeev Ravi's crime drama Kammatipaadam (2016). The film garnered critical acclaim and became Salmaan's fifth consecutive commercial success in two years.[43]

As of May 2016, Salmaan is filming an untitled Amal Neerad film.[44] In addition, he has committed to star in projects by Pratap Pothen and Sathyan Anthikad.[45][46]

Personal life and other work

Salmaan is the second child of actor Mammootty and his wife Sulfath. He has an elder sister, Surumi. On 22 December 2011, Salmaan married architect Amal Sufiya in an arranged marriage. Amal comes from a North Indian Muslim family settled in Chennai.[47][48]

Salmaan has been involved in several social service activities. He has acted in a short film as part of the Kerala motor vehicle department's safe riding campaign.[49] He donated 150 items, including clothing, shoes, books, school supplies and crockery items, as a part of the Chennai Gives initiative.[50] In addition, he is the owner of several businesses, including a web portal for trading cars and a dental business chain in Chennai. He also acts as the director of the Bangalore-based Motherhood Hospital.[10]

In the media

Salmaan has been voted as the Kochi Times Most Desirable Men 2014 based on online polls conducted by the Indiatimes Group.[51] He had ranked 7th in Chennai Times Most Desirable Men 2014[52] and ranked 45th in Times 50 Most Desirable Men 2014 in India.[53]
