El Señor de los Cielos (English title: The Lord of the Skies),[1] is an American telenovela co-produced by Argos Comunicación and Telemundo. The first season of the series was co-produced by Telemundo and Caracol Televisión. The series is based on the life and work of Amado Carrillo Fuentes, the former leader of the Juarez Cartel.

The executive producers of the show are Marcela Mejía, Martha Godoy, and Joshua Mintz. Juan Manuel Andrade, Mariano Calasso, Jorge Cervantes, Iris Dubs, Andrés López, Carmina Narro, Guillermo Ríos, Laura Sosa and Luis Zelkowicz are the original series writers. It is directed by Danny Gavidia, Walter Doehner, José Luis García Agraz and Carlos Villegas.

El Señor de los Cielos premiered in United States on April 15, 2013. The first season comprised 74 episodes, the second 84, and season three 104; it is the first super series produced by Telemundo in having four seasons.[2]

The series follows Aurelio Casillas, portrayed by Rafael Amaya, a murderous, narcissistic drug kingpin who seeks power and respect as he eludes the incompetent DEA and corrupt Mexican authorities.

Season 1 (2013)

El Señor de los Cielos is a fictional story filled with action, emotion, unbridled passions, luxuries, misery, intrigue, and suspense. Inspired by true events, the series chronicles the life of Aurelio Casillas, the biggest drug lord[clarification needed] in Mexico during the 1990´s, whose great ambition was to become the most rich and powerful man in Mexico and its surroundings. From the time his photograph was first publicized, his face became his worst obstacle; justice and his enemies began to haunt him, and for this reason he underwent plastic surgery.

Season 2 (2014)

When the world thought Aurelio Casillas had died trying to change his face, El Señor de los Cielos was already a legend. However, he returned from the shadows to eliminate his enemies, and without obstacles, to extend his narcotics network worldwide.

Season 3 (2015)

El Señor de los Cielos is imprisoned in a bunker of the Mexican Navy. He has spent months locked in a cell without knowing if it is day or night, withstanding the hard punishment of torturers who seek out the names and whereabouts of his accomplices. But Aurelio has not opened his mouth, because his real pain was not felt in the blows to his body, but on the inside, in his conscience, after having lost his freedom, his empire, the life of Heriberto, his eldest son, the love of his daughter, Rutila, His lover Mónica Robles, and all the women who loved him.

Season 4 (2016)

Aurelio Casillas, associated with political strategists, has successfully placed a puppet of his allies in the chair of Pines, finally reaching the site both craved: the summit of power. But this season will not be the law but its own body that will put limits to their aspirations. A hard kidney disease will force people to use their blood to find a donor for transplant necessary life-saving. Finding no support for any of his close relatives, Aurelio will use this long record of amorous conquests that left scattered over the world, looking for a lost son who can be your salvation.

Future seasons and Spinoff

On May 12, 2015, Telemundo confirmed the fourth season of the series, during the presentation of Upfront 2015-2016.[9]

Actor Mauricio Ochmann confirmed that there will be a fifth and sixth season.[10]

Telemundo confirmed on May 15, 2016 that the series would see a spinoff based upon actor Mauricio Ochmann's character 'El Chema'.[11]
