Elections in Iran
Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. Iran elects on national level a head of state and head of government (the president), a legislature (the Majlis), and an "Assembly of Experts" (which elects the Supreme Leader). Also City and Village Council elections are held every four years throughout the country. The president is elected for a four-year term by the people. The Parliament or Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis-e Shura-ye Eslami) has 290 members, elected for a four-year term in multi- and single-seat constituencies. Elections for the Assembly of Experts are held every eight years. Mayors will be elected by popular vote for the first time in 2013. All candidates have to be approved by the Guardian Council. See Politics of Iran for more details.
Until January 2007, when it was raised to 18, the voting age was 15 years, the lowest globally at the time.[1]
The most recent presidential election and the most recent local elections were held on 14 June 2013, simultaneously for the first time.[2][3]

Notes
- ↑ Despite an increase in Iranian population comparing to previous elections, number of eligible voters decreased. This was due to the fact that voting age was raised from 15 to 18.[11] Ministry of Interior declared that eligible voters are some 43 million people, while according to the official results of 2006 general census done by the ministry's subdivision, "Statistical Center of Iran" (Persian: مرکز آمار ایران), the population of people over 18 years old was millions more, particularly 47,579,013. This led to allegations of 'manipulation'.[12][13][14]
- ↑ The official voter turnout was declared 64.2% by the Ministry of Interior. Considering the official statistics published by the ministry, observers and analysts say that the numbers are paradoxical and the turnout would be calculated 54.6% or 54.8%. They also dispute number of eligible voters.[17][18]
