Ernst Dehmel was awarded the Knight's cross while in command of the 3rd Sturmgeschütz (Self-propelled assault gun, StuG) Battalion, 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf in August 1943, for his unit's role in the Battle of Kursk and the Battle of Belgorod. [1]
