Eugenio of Savoy (Eugenio Ilarione; 21 October 1753 – 30 June 1785)[1] was a Prince of the House of Savoy and the Count of Villafranca in his own right. He was the youngest brother of the famous princesse de Lamballe.

He was the founder of the Villafranca line which in turn was a cadet branch of the House of Savoy.

Biography

Born in Turin, he was the youngest son of the Louis Victor of Savoy and his German wife Christine of Hesse-Rotenburg. The eighth of nine children, he was the youngest brother of the famous Princess Maria Luisa of Savoy, princesse de Lamballe and friend of Marie Antoinette as well as the fifth Prince of Carignano.

His extended family included the French Prince of Condé and the Italian Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia and the spinster Princesses Eleonora, Maria Luisa and Maria Felicita.

He married Elisabeth Anne Magon de Boisgarin in Saint-Méloir-des-Ondes, Brittany on 22 February 1781, the bride was twelve years younger than he. The union produced a son, Prince Giuseppe who succeeded Eugenio when he died in Domart, Picardy aged 31.

The now morganatic Villafranca line of the House of Savoy survives today, headed by Edoardo, Count of Villafranca-Soissons.
