It was played before the League of Ireland season began, usually in July. The first 3 tournaments consisted of two semi finals, with the losers playing off for 3rd place and the winners going through to the final, the last year in 2001 consisted of a single round robin group with the winners awarded the title. Teams qualified for the Super Cup on the basis of playing in that year's UEFA competitions.
