Summary
Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. (May 5, 2004) – A Crane lifts an Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) aboard the guided missile destroyer USS McCampbell (DDG 85). ESSM is an international cooperative upgrade of the RIM 7 NATO Sea Sparrow Missile. ESSM provides increased battle space against high-speed, highly maneuverable anti-ship missiles. Loaded in a "quad-pack" canister for the MK-41 vertical launch system (VLS), this tail-controlled missile with Thrust Vector Control, and a quick start guidance section, offers a significant increase in load-out, response time, and fire power. McCampbell is the first ship to deploy with the ESSM. U.S. Navy photo by Lt. j.g. Joel Jackson (RELEASED)
