Summary

Banquet of Charles V the Sage Great Chronicles of France, illuminated by Jean Fouquet, Tours, vers 1455-1460 Paris, BnF, Department of Manuscripts, French 6465, fol. 444v. (book by Charles V) on January 6, 1378, the day of the Feast of Epiphany, King Charles V the Sage gave a banquet in honor of Charles IV, Emperor of Bohemia, and his son Wenceslas, King of the Romans. The meal is held in the Grand Hall of the palace in the presence of the court and a considerable crowd of dignitaries. This work is part of the cycle of paintings performed by Jean Fouquet around 1460 to illustrate a copy of The Great Chronicles of France, probably destined for King Charles VII. It closes the story of the visit that the king of France, Charles V († 1380), received from his maternal uncle, Emperor Charles IV of Bohemia († Nov. 1378), who came to France during the winter of 1377-1378, accompanied by his eldest son, Prince Wenceslas, Count of Luxembourg and King of the Romans.
