Built in 1824 as the private residence of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lovell" class="extiw" title="en:Joseph Lovell">Joseph Lovell</a>, the eighth <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon_General_of_the_United_States_Army" class="extiw" title="en:Surgeon General of the United States Army">Surgeon General of the United States Army</a>, the main building was designated as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Historic_Landmark" class="extiw" title="en:National Historic Landmark">National Historic Landmark</a> in 1966. The Blair House is also designated as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contributing_property" class="extiw" title="en:Contributing property">contributing property</a> to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lafayette_Square_Historic_District_(Washington,_D.C.)" class="extiw" title="en:Lafayette Square Historic District (Washington, D.C.)">Lafayette Square Historic District</a>, listed on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places" class="extiw" title="en:National Register of Historic Places">National Register of Historic Places</a> in 1970.
