The Mile Post is a stone obelisk forming a memorial to rowing coach <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Fairbairn" class="extiw" title="en:Steve Fairbairn">Steve Fairbairn</a>, founder of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_the_River_Race" class="extiw" title="en:Head of the River Race">Head of the River Race</a>. Exactly one mile from The Boat Race start, it is a traditional timing point.
