Summary

Canterbury castle Viewed from inside the city walls near Rheims Way. Castle Street can be seen on the right. The castle was largely built in the reign of Henry I and by the 13th century had become the county gaol. In the 19th century it was used by a gas company as a storage centre for gas, which explains why the street to the north of the ruins is called Gas Street. It is now owned by the local authority.
