View northward from the footbridge at the north end of Crewe Station, down the West Coast Main Line to Preston, Carlisle etc., also Liverpool, the Manchester line curving off to the right. The 13.20 Llandudno - Derby Summer Saturday express is coming off the Chester line across the main lines, headed by LMS 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45700 'Amethyst' piloting Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 45026. Masts are already being erected for the electrification that commenced (to Manchester) 18 months later. Countless train-spotters crowd the end of Platform 4.
