Former Flag of Orkney
My own vector of the former (unofficial) flag of the Isles of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney" class="extiw" title="w:Orkney">Orkney</a>], <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland" class="extiw" title="w:Scotland">Scotland</a>, created using Inkscape. It is a red <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_Cross" class="extiw" title="w:Nordic Cross">Nordic Cross</a> on a yellow field in the form of the Cross of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus_Erlendsson,_Earl_of_Orkney" class="extiw" title="w:Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney">St Magnus</a>. The flag resembled the flags of both the ancient <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union" class="extiw" title="w:Kalmar Union">Kalmar Union</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Ireland" class="extiw" title="w:Kingdom of Ireland">Irish</a> Province of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster" class="extiw" title="w:Ulster">Ulster</a> to such a degree that the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyon_Court" class="extiw" title="w:Lyon Court">Lyon Court</a> refused to grant this particular design official status. As a result, it remained the 'unofficial' flag of Orkney for many years.
In 2007 however, the inhabitants of Orkney held a ballot to determine an official design for a flag to represent the Islands of Orkney. The new flag was designed in consultation with the Lyon Court and was selected from a short-leet of 5 which were put to a ballot.
