器形仿中国北方游牧民族的皮囊壶，壶的两面各饰有一匹衔杯的舞马，旧说舞马始于<a href="https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%94%90%E6%98%8E%E7%9A%87" class="extiw" title="zh:唐明皇">zh:唐明皇</a>，但据考证舞马起于<a href="https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%9B%B9%E9%AD%8F" class="extiw" title="zh:曹魏">zh:曹魏</a>。
