Summary
Note - a composite portrait of the Bourbon succession since Henri IV (with Louis XIII he is seen as a bust) with copies of portraits made at different dates. The female figure is Louis XV's governess, Madame de Ventadour, who commissioned the work - not Mme de Maintenon as used to be claimed. The child is the Duke of Brittany, 2 or 3 years old. The future Louis XV is not yet born at the time this painting is claimed to be made. However, if the painting is from 1715-1720, then the child is Louis XV.
