Summary

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STEREO" class="extiw" title="en:STEREO">STEREO-A</a> HI-1A image of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/comet" class="extiw" title="w:comet">comet</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C/2011_W3_(Lovejoy)" class="extiw" title="w:C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy)">C/2011 W3 (Lovejoy)</a> in December 2011. The comet's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/comet_tail" class="extiw" title="en:comet tail">tail</a> is clearly interacting with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/solar_wind" class="extiw" title="w:solar wind">solar wind</a> with several discontinuities visible. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/comet_nucleus" class="extiw" title="w:comet nucleus">comet nucleus</a> of Lovejoy has been estimated to be between 100 and 200 meters (325 and 650 ft) in diameter. Notice the companion comet immediately above Lovejoy in the latter half of the sequence; it is speculated that this fragment <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_nucleus#Splitting" class="extiw" title="en:Comet nucleus">broke off</a> of Lovejoy several decades ago, due to the separation between the two.
