He was a founding member and president of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seafarers_International_Union" class="extiw" title="w:Seafarers International Union">w:Seafarers International Union</a> from 1957 to 1980. He was the senior vice president of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL-CIO" class="extiw" title="w:AFL-CIO">w:AFL-CIO</a> at the time of his death.
