Summary

This unique <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/prayer_book" class="extiw" title="w:prayer book">prayer book</a> was probably made for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_the_Wise" class="extiw" title="w:Frederick the Wise">Frederick the Wise</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elector_of_Saxony" class="extiw" title="w:Elector of Saxony">Elector of Saxony</a>. The image of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_Sorrows" class="extiw" title="w:Man of Sorrows">Man of Sorrows</a> by the Column, illustrated here, is placed at the end of the pictorial narrative. Unlike the other engravings in the series, it does not depict a particular event from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_of_Christ" class="extiw" title="w:Passion of Christ">Passion</a>. As a symbolic image, it combines <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ" class="extiw" title="w:Christ">Christ</a>'s sacrifice and its redemptive meaning, both of which are reflected in the text of the facing prayer.
